CEMS and AQMS: How to Deploy Environmental Monitoring at an Industrial Facility
Environmental monitoring is no longer a box-ticking exercise for reporting. Today it is part of industrial infrastructure, on a par with power supply or ICS. SIGMA PRO designs and deploys environmental monitoring systems in which measuring equipment from leading global manufacturers, automation and analytics run in a single loop, and the facility moves from one-off measurements to continuous management of environmental risk.
Two technologies sit at the core of these systems: CEMS and AQMS. Below, we look at how they differ and why they belong together.
CEMS: monitoring at the emission source
CEMS (Continuous Emission Monitoring System) continuously monitors industrial emissions. It is installed directly at the source: the stacks of power, metallurgical, cement and chemical facilities.
- Gaseous components: NOₓ, SO₂, CO, CO₂
- Dust and particulate matter (PM)
- Process-specific substances: HCl, HF, NH₃, O₂ and others, depending on the process
- Process parameters: flue gas temperature, pressure, humidity, velocity and flow rate
CEMS shows not just the fact of an emission but how it changes in real time.
CEMS data shows how well the gas cleaning equipment is performing and where the process has drifted out of range. Environmental data goes straight into the ICS / SCADA, alongside all other production parameters.
AQMS: air quality in the impact zone
CEMS records what the stack emits and how much. AQMS (Air Quality Monitoring System) answers a different question: how those emissions affect the environment. These are automatic stations placed on site, in the sanitary protection zone (SPZ) and in the surrounding areas.
- Particulate matter: fine and coarse dust (PM2.5 and PM10)
- Gaseous pollutants: NO₂, SO₂, CO, O₃, H₂S, NH₃, volatile organic compounds
- Meteorological parameters: wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure
Combining air composition with weather data makes it possible to model pollutant dispersion and assess conditions around the facility objectively.
One system, not two separate instruments
Together, CEMS and AQMS give an end-to-end picture, from a specific stack to the air in the neighbouring district. In practice, that means three things.
- Prevention instead of reaction. A deviation becomes visible before it turns into an incident.
- Reliable, continuous data. Measurements run around the clock, with no gaps between samplings.
- Transparent reporting to regulators and local residents.
How SIGMA PRO deploys CEMS and AQMS
A system like this is an engineering project, not an equipment delivery. As a systems integrator, SIGMA PRO handles the entire rollout:
- Design tailored to the specific site and process
- Selection and supply of measuring equipment from proven global manufacturers
- Automation: schematics, cabinet assembly, software
- Certification for compliance with O'ZMSt 194:2024 and O'ZMSt 195:2024
- Installation and commissioning
- Data integration with ICS and enterprise management systems
Monitoring data is transmitted directly to the Ecology Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan, with no manual exports or interim reports.
